Dear community

we are glad to inform you about the CEN-CENELEC Workshop on Plastics, with focus on polyvinyl butyral (PVB) recyclates.

Up to now, most of the post-consumer PVB material in laminated glass is incinerated or landfilled, and only 9 % are recycled in secondary uses. Recycling of PVB presents several difficulties related with the contents of glass, humidity, mixing of compositions and polymer optical degradation.

The goal of the CWA is to support the use of PVB recyclates by helping the involved parties to agree on the required specifications and promote quality controls and information on properties of PVB recyclates.

The objective of the European funded research project SUNRISE is to optimize the recycling of PVB from laminated glass by sorting the incoming material according to the composition and quality of its PVB interlayer. The different sorted grades of the corresponding PVB recyclates can then be used in various applications.

Organizations/individuals with an interest in the subject have several ways to get involved:

  • By submitting comments on the draft Project Plan and/or the draft CWA, via the commenting form until 2024-04-08 to claudia.laabs@din.de
  • By attending the kick-off meeting on 2024-04-12 in Berlin (or virtually) during which the draft Project Plan will be discussed and agreed upon. Interested parties can register to the kick-off meeting by sending an e-mail to claudia.laabs@din.de;
  • By joining the CEN Workshop following the kick-off meeting to participate in the drafting of the CWA, by filling the WS registration form.
