Although information technology is a lever for achieving sustainability goals, it is also crucial that it itself is designed to be resource-efficient in order to contribute to climate protection. Software also contributes to many environmental challenges, such as the increase in electronic waste or unnecessarily high energy consumption. While previous standardization activities have mainly dealt with the energy and material efficiency of hardware, the topic of software is increasingly coming into focus. This topic has not yet been dealt with in detail in standardization and the potential for standardization has not yet been comprehensively considered.
